Biography

“…a born performer who lives completely inside the music.”
— Thea Derks, Cultuurpers (2016)

Manuel Sanguino is a Dominican-born pianist whose artistry has carried him from the Caribbean to the principal concert halls of the Netherlands and beyond.

Pianist Manuel Sanguino was born in the Dominican Republic and holds Spanish nationality. From an early age, he demonstrated exceptional musical talent, leading to international recognition and a scholarship from the Danilo Pérez Foundation to participate in the Panama Jazz Festival.

He continued his musical development in the Netherlands, where he was awarded first prize at the Perpetuum Mobile Competition of the Young Talent Academy of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. In the following years, he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Morphing Chamber Orchestra during the Musik Zentral Festival in Austria.

“I carry every audience with me into the next concert. They shape where I go far more than any title or prize.”

In 2013, he won first prize and the audience award at the national final of the Prinses Christina Competition in The Hague and was selected as a finalist for Young Musician of the Year, the Dutch preliminary round of Eurovision Young Musicians, broadcast on national television.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Sanguino has collaborated with the Dutch Chamber Orchestra, Dutch Symphony Orchestra, The Hague Philharmonic, Sinfonia Rotterdam, and the Morphing Chamber Orchestra. He has performed in major venues including the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), TivoliVredenburg (Utrecht), and Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ (Amsterdam), among other prominent halls across Europe.

His engagement with contemporary repertoire led to the performance of the world premiere of a piano quartet by Gerard Zinsstag in collaboration with the Mozarteum University and the Institut Neue Musik in Salzburg.

In 2024, he performed live for His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and the Dutch royal family during the King's Day celebration in Emmen, broadcast nationally on television and radio.

Alongside his performing career, Sanguino is actively involved in music education and artistic research, focusing on listening, timbre, and the use of extended piano techniques in pedagogical contexts.
